PREA Hotline

VIA LINK provides a Prison Rape Elimination Act Hotline

The Law

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) is a federal law that was enacted in 2003.  It was created to eliminate sexual assault in America’s prisons, juvenile detention facilities and immigration detention centers. Jails, prisons and juvenile detention centers are required to offer this hotline.  VIA LINK provides this service to sheriff departments and other agencies by subscription.

Confidential Support

One resource that PREA provides is a hotline that gives inmates an external, confidential source where they can report assault and receive counseling and emotional support.  The PREA hotline serves inmates as well as third parties, including family members, friends and volunteers (though third-party callers do not receive counseling services). The PREA Hotline number for the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office is 504-717-2279.
